Environmental & Natural Resources Programs

The Army Strategy for the Environment: Sustain the Mission – Secure the Future establishes the long-range vision to enable the Army to meet its mission today and into the future.  This strategy represents a change in focus from the previous compliance-based environmental program to a mission-oriented approach based on the principles of sustainability.   A sustainable Army is defined in this document as one that simultaneously meets current as well as future mission requirements worldwide, safeguards human health, improves the quality of life, and enhances the natural environment.  The Army Strategy for the Environment emphasizes the interdependence of the Army’s mission, the community, and the environment – the Triple Bottom Line.  This strategy outlines six main goals:

  1. Foster an ethic within the Army that takes us beyond environmental compliance to sustainability
  2. Strengthen Army operational capability by reducing our environmental footprint through more sustainable practices
  3. Meet current and future training, and other mission requirements by sustaining land, air, and water resources
  4. Minimize impacts and total ownership costs of Army systems, materiel, facilities, and operations by integrating the principles and practices of sustainability
  5. Enhance the well being of our soldiers, civilians, families, neighbors and communities through leadership in sustainability
  6. Use innovative technology and the principles of sustainability to meet user needs and anticipate future Army challenges

The Fort Novosel Environmental and Natural Resources Division works to implement the ideals of the Army Strategy for the Environment through programs in the Environmental Management Branch and in the Natural Resources Branch.  Although the strategy has a goal of going beyond compliance to sustainability, the importance of compliance with environmental regulations cannot be ignored.  The programs within each branch have compliance requirements that must be met diligently before we can reach the specified goals.  Details about the requirements for compliance and the different program elements can be found on the links in the column to the left.
